Summer tanning solution

It never feels like summer without a little sun kissed look, and tanning is always been a big part of it.  Rather than expose yourself under the sun or heating up yourself on a harmful tanning bed, self-tanner becomes a safe approach.  I opened up the June 2009 Allure magazine and there is a half page beauty report on self-tan products, it listed some pros and cons about each product, which I’m probably going to try.  However, it’s very tricky when it comes to my yellow skin undertone, finding a self-tan product that doesn’t make me look orange is hard, so I’m always on a mission trying to hunt down the best self-tan product in spring/summer.

So out of all the products that I’ve tried (of course I didn’t tried all the products from the market), there are a couple of them that I really like.  First of all, self-tan products could be categorized into 2 different types, one is the actual tanning lotion that give you colour gradually, these products generally don’t have the bronze colour, but they gradually darken your skin after you apply it for a period of time.  The colour will stay on usually around 7-10 days, and for better results, re-apply it every week so the tan doesn’t fade.

Vichy CAPITAL SOLEIL Self-Tan Face & Body Milk

Vichy CAPITAL SOLEIL Self-Tan Face & Body Milk, £12.31

This is by far my favourite, it is inexpensive and it doesn’t give me the orang-ie look that I hated.  It just gave me a hint of colour the first time that I applied it, the effect will kick an hour after the application.  The colour just becoming slightly darker after the second application week after, it’s very mild.  The best part of this is that it gives me really good hydration with pure Vitamin E and thermal spa water, my skin doesn’t feel sticky or dry after using it.  It also gives you a very nice radiant look, not the shimmery type one, but more like a natural radiant look.

This is also in a form of milk, a very mild self-tanner.  It contains the sesame oil which helps to soften your skin, with SPF6, which is very minimal, so you’ll still need to use sun block for stronger UV protection.  Similar to the Vichy CAPITAL SOLEIL, you’ll start seeing result in about an hour.  There is one added feature in this product, it helps to protect against premature signs of aging and free radicals with Clarins Multi-Cellular Protection, so it’s really good for age 25+.  This is only for body, if you needed the one for face, you have to go with the Liquid Bronzed that has no SPF in it.

Mystic Tan Sunless Tanning Lotion™ Face + Body

Mystic Tan is quite popular these days, especially the spray.  However, I still prefer the lotion.  The spray is good when you have to worry about cleaning the area around you when you spray it because the spray has colour, and you still need to do the “blending” when you use the spray, it’s not complete care-free after-all.  With lotion, I can just gently massage my body, my skin feels moisturized and smooth after using the lotion, trust me, it’s a better feeling then using the spray.  For first time Mystic Tan user, you can get the kit, the colour lasts quite a while, but you don’t really need the other 2 products if you are not looking for intensifying the tan.  I didn’t, so I just use this lotion over time to maintain the light tan look.  Now, it is a more expensive product especially if you are using all 3 of them over time, but it is a very good product, so I suggest you work with what you needed the most.  If you really like a more aggressive tan look, I’ll go with this one.

The second type of tanning product is actually just a single day make-up for your body, the colour wouldn’t hold at all, they will be washed out.  But if you are not mastering the self-tanner application and you still want the look, I suggest you go with this kind instead.  I mean, rather then an un-even application with patches of dark colour on your skin, you might as well just go with the easy way right?

Laura Mercier Body Bronzing Makeup

I’m always a fan of Laura Mercier makeup, this might be bias because I work with this line for 5 years and I know her product from inside out.  If you want me talk about Laura’s product, I do have a lot to tell you, but I’m gonna keep this in the later days.   Laura has a Bronzing Gel for Face, and now she just introduced the Body Bronzing Makeup (for a limited time only) also in gel form.  It gives you really great luminosity and radiance.  The formula contains light-reflective particles that disguise imperfections while adding a subtle sheen to your body. It is lightly scented with the Almond Coconut Milk, it just gives you that nice beach-y smell and the best part of it?  It’s transfer resistant!!

NARS Body Glow

Body Glow actually has quite a history, it’s one of the first body makeup that I use when I first working as a make-up artist, it’s been a couple of years, and I still love it.  The Body Glow is in an oil form with rich chocolate shimmer.  It has a unique blend of Monoï de Tahiti oil and contains pure coconut extract, not only that it smells good, it also soothes and moisture your skin.  The only trouble using it is that you have to shake it really well because the shimmer tends to sink at the bottom and hardens after a period of time, and you have to really warm it up before you use it so that it turned into a light liquid, this way it’ll quickly absorb by your skin.

Guerlain Terracotta is always one of the favourite line to use when it comes to creating a sun kissed look, their face bronzers are amazing, and it’s getting better year after year.  There is no surprise that the Terracotta body product is also amazing, that contains mother-of-pearl, and extract of Tiare flower.  This product is a little different then the other 2 body makeup, it actually gives you instant colour and helped to intensify your tan with its Tan Booster Technology.  For those of you who are looking for maintaining your tan, this would definitely be yours.

Let me know if you find something else that would work for a yellow skin undertone,  in the mean time, I’ll keep enjoying these products =)
