Temptu AIRbrush Makeup System, USD$225

Temptu launched its AIRbrush Makeup System and AIR pod Foundation at Sephora, I was actually interested until I saw the price.  I wanted to see how it really looked so I tried it when I was at the Sephore store in NYC, not that I have no experience of airbrush make-up, but just out of curiosity as a make-up artist.  In fact, I used airbrush make-up since I was in make-up school, it was fairly new to us back then and we were all exciting about using airbrush make-up.  However, I must admit that it wasn’t my favourite for a couple of reasons.

1.  For pro artists, we had to bring a compressor and it’s heavy.

2.  There are 3 types of airbrush make-up, silicone based, water based, and alcohol based.  The first 2 can be used for regular use, alcohol based is for body paint, and we need separate mixing medium for each of them because the pro products are highly concentrated.

3.  The airbrush gun needs to be cleaned after use of each and every colour before we start mixing the next one.

4.  Airbrush can’t do anything, you may still need powder to set the make-up, cuz it’s liquid.

5.  It’s time consuming.

Okay…there is no doubt that airbrush make-up gives you a look – an airbrushed look, what it really mean is that, it looks like your second skin.  Which is a good thing, and I’m glad that Temptu came out with the consumer version of the airbrush make-up so that everyone can try, and I must say it is a great product.  Do I think it’s worth it?  Absolutely NOT!!  Unless I can manage to airbrush everything.  Ideally, you can airbrush a thin eyeliner if you have great skill, but with all the mixing and cleaning, I think it’s much faster for me to just use brushes.  You also need powder to set your liquid make-up, so in the end airbrush really can’t do anything.

Now leave the trouble behind for a second and be objective.  Airbrush make-up does give you a nice finish and natural look, and the colours for body paint are just fascinating.  The silicone based make-up staying power is unbeatable and it won’t leave your skin feeling dry.  I guess you just have to weight the pros and cons yourself to figure out if you need it.  It’ a 5 star product by looking at all the reviews. (well, I guess customers wouldn’t buy it if they don’t love it, it’s a lot of investment!!)  Just make sure you have your powder with you for touch up during the day.

You can also take a look at the video, see if you really want it.

Will you spend $225 + $55 to just get the foundation done?  I mean, thank about being economical for a second and be environmentally friendly, you need power and energy to put on a foundation?  I’d say just stick with the old traditional way of using fingers.  If you have the money, I’d suggest you give it a try, make it your daily make-up routine and it could be totally worth it.  But as a pro, it’s just not feasible for me to travel with my make-up kit plus my airbrush kit.  If I’m in the studio all day just doing photo-shoots, I would totally do it, but not when I’m traveling for sure!

I saw this paid commercial on TV last weekend for airbrush makeup (https://www.luminessair.com). There is a 30 day trial offer (click on the 30 Day TV Offer link and it’ll show you all the price points for the different kits). They say just add a few drops of their makeup and you’re ready to go (no mixing mediums). Clean up is just adding a few drops of water and spray it clean. Looks awesome, but then again its TV. Apparently the head MUA on Desperate Housewives uses this on the show. What do you think about this system? Was tempted to get one to try for my ridiculously uneven complexion. Love the idea of weightless coverage,..still hate the feel of foundation on my face =(

I looked at it too although I’d still need to take more classes before feeling comfortable with doing airbrushing, but this particular machine is more for personal use since you can only use those pods provided, which also means you cannot mix the foundation for a perfect match! yes those things are bulky while this one is compact and attractive, but if you are gonna do it, might as well do it right, right? ^^
